Alison Lee broke her club in two after it struck a tree at the PIF London Championship.

During the first spherical, Lee confronted a difficult state of affairs on the fifteenth gap, discovering her ball at the bottom of a tree trunk. Instead of accepting a penalty drop for an unplayable lie, the LPGA Tour professional gambled with her club, trying a high-risk recovery shot to defend her scorecard. She unleashed a highly effective, aggressive swing, but the follow-through drove the shaft of her club straight into the stable tree trunk, splitting it in two.

Fortunately, Lee prevented injury, which was particularly important given that she has been managing a neck injury throughout the season.

“I feel like my game is in a really good place,” Lee commented at the Women’s PGA Championship. “I’m not going to lie; before the round, I had a little bit of a kink in my neck, so I had to take a lot of Advil before the round.

“But I really feel like I held on fairly good, particularly the last few holes when it felt like I could not fairly get to my end with the pain in my neck, which might be what I get for taking part in 4 weeks in a row. My physique is just falling aside.

“I feel like my game has been in a really good place the last few months. I feel like I do really well at tough courses, especially with tough conditions, since I’m striking the ball really well. So just tried to use that to my advantage today.”

The 31-year-old golfer, who joined the LPGA Tour in 2015, has amassed more than $1.1 million this season alone, though she acknowledged she’s presently dealing with an injury.

“No one really wants to play in pain, and you play your best golf when you’re pain-free,” she explained in late June. “But given the circumstances today, I just tried my best to put a low round together and just play smart, and I played a lot better than I thought I would.

“It’s just attempting to slow down. For me, my personal swing habits is I get actually fast when I get nervous. My routine will get fast, as nicely.

“When I have this little kink here, it helps me slow down. Especially today with the wind, the first few holes were straight into the wind. I was just kind of hitting a low punch shot, and that worked nicely, especially the first few holes. Once you get that confidence, that really helps with the rest of the round.”
