Marty Smith in hot water for spilling Patrick | Golf News

Marty Smith inadvertently revealed Patrick Cantlay’s birthday secret during the TGL semi-final match.

Cantlay and his Atlanta Drive TGL squad fell short of reaching the finals. He competed alongside Chris Gotterup and Billy Horschel for only the second time this season, with the trio having beforehand secured a 7-4 victory over the Bay Golf Club in January.

Cantlay, ranked World No. 35 and an eight-time PGA Tour champion, is understood as one of the tour’s most low-key gamers. And he had hoped to keep his birthday personal from both the SoFi Center crowd and online viewers.

During a mid-match interview, Marty Smith wished Cantlay “Happy birthday,” prompting Matt Barrie to acknowledge the 34-year-old’s attempt at secrecy.

“Marty you’re in so much trouble for announcing that,” Barrie commented during the published. “He wanted to keep it under wraps.”

Cantlay turned 34 on semi-final day, but the celebration was dampened as Atlanta Drive was eradicated. This wasn’t the squad’s first defeat of the season—they also suffered a loss to Los Angeles in late February.

“I’m disappointed. I hate losing,” Horschel remarked following the February defeat.

“And it sucked tonight. But listen, I think we’re pretty much a lock for the playoffs. PC and Chris and JT played beautiful at the 5:00 match and obviously made our match a little bit less stressful. But yeah, it sucks to lose. I hate that.

“But it has been a good season. We’ve had a lot of — I believe in contrast to every other group, we have had to deal with accidents, and Chris has come in and jumped in, and I believe everybody has performed rather well. So we have a group of 5 gamers that are stable, and we did effectively last 12 months in the playoffs, and I like that we’re going to be back in the playoffs.”

Cantlay also expressed his enjoyment of the TGL events, despite their season ending against the Los Angeles Golf Club.

“It’s been a long day,” Cantlay remarked following the earlier defeat.

“But I do not thoughts it. It’s enjoyable taking part in these occasions, and it is good to be out right here with the fellows. We had a good match at 5:00 and we fought onerous on the market tonight. But yeah, long day. I’ll get some relaxation.”

Teammate Horschel emphasized that regardless of the situation, the roster simply needs to be confident in their performance.

“I do not assume it actually issues,” Horschel stated.

“I believe we would like to really feel good about our video games. Obviously, yeah, we did not win tonight, but I believe as a entire, all 5 of us need to really feel like our sport is in good condition so when we do come in right here, we’re prepared to play. It’s no different than a match; you need to really feel good, in control of your golf ball, in control of your sport. I believe if you do that, momentum is sometimes a moot level.”
