MasterChef viewers left baffled by simple | UK News

MasterChef viewers have been left puzzled by Thursday night’s quarter-final problem.

Series 22 sees celebrated chef Anna Haugh and restaurant critic Grace Dent step in to change Gregg Wallace and John Torode as judges. The duo will put 48 of the nation’s best novice cooks through their paces with a collection of spectacular challenges.

During Thursday’s opening quarter-final of collection 22, the first job noticed the home cooks challenged with crafting pancakes, making full use of the contemporary ingredients out there to them.

It was, however, the second problem that left audiences scratching their heads. During the episode, famend food critic Jay Rayner appeared as a particular visitor, setting the cooks a job of his own devising.

Jay, 59, said: “The challenge I’ve set you sounds very simple. I’ve asked you to make a salad. But we do not want a limp bowl of lettuce, we want structure, texture, we want a killer dressing… something that will rock us back on our feet.”

The contestants have been then given 90 minutes to assemble their salads, studies the Mirror.

Viewers took to Twitter, now X, in their droves to air their bewilderment over the salad problem. One consumer wrote: “#masterchef A salad …, a salad, are you for real” while another posted: “Salad? Or a mix of things #MasterChef.”

Elsewhere, one fan drew comparisons with The Simpsons as they quipped: “#Masterchef You don’t win friends with salad, you don’t win friends with salad…” Another puzzled viewer merely remarked: “A salad?! #MasterChef” while a separate fan joked: “No good story ever started with ‘I was having a salad and then'”.

After the problem, Jhané and Sabina left Anna, Grace and Jay completely impressed with their outstanding salads. Jhané selected a Thai-influenced salad that includes grilled pork, pork pores and skin, sugar snap peas, lettuce, mint, fennel and thai basil. She accompanied it with deep fried rice paper and a lime sesame dressing, incomes reward for its ‘intelligent’ presentation.

Guest Jay was completely happy as he enthused: “This is exactly what I was hoping for when I set the salad challenge!”

Meanwhile, Sabina equally wowed the judges with her ‘concord salad’, comprising spiced black pea falafel, gem lettuce, carrot, pomegranate, salted chicken pores and skin, beetroot quail eggs, puffed rice and curry leaves. It got here with a confit garlic and mustard oil dressing. Jay hailed the salad as “amazing”.

Once all the contestants had introduced their dishes, Jay conceded: “It was a tough challenge asking them to make a salad, some of them embraced it brilliantly!”

At the close of the programme, it was announced that Jhané and Sabina had progressed to the next spherical, alongside fellow contestant Jim.
