Meta bans social media TikTok advertisements across the US | Latest Tech News

Facebook and Instagram-owner Meta has banned commercials by ByteDance, the Chinese father or mother of TikTok, on its platforms in ​the United States and a handful of other nations, a company spokesperson said ‌on Thursday.

The transfer marks an escalation in the long-running rivalry between Meta and ByteDance, whose video-sharing app TikTok has emerged as one of Meta’s most formidable rivals for person engagement, creators and promoting {dollars}.

TikTok and ByteDance didn’t immediately reply to GWN requests for remark on Meta’s transfer.

TikTok’s web site reveals ​that it doesn’t assist hyperlinks that open or log customers into other social media ​apps.

However, customers can still add hyperlinks to their profiles that direct people to those platforms’ web sites.

Meta has ‌been urging ⁠TikTok and YouTube to observe steps it agreed to take on teen security in August following a settlement of up to $18 billion with US states over social media harms to kids.

TikTok has not publicly commented on Meta’s marketing campaign, but it reached a settlement with Alabama in September that requires the ​social media platform to impose new usage limits and improve age-verification ​measures for ⁠customers in the state, resolving claims that it endangered kids and misled shoppers about its security.

TikTok operates in the US as a majority American-owned three way partnership after a deal aimed at safeguarding US ⁠person data ​and averting a US ban on an app used ​by more than 200 million customers in the nation.
