“A sanction of that size has no analog in the history of consumer protection enforcement,” Meta’s attorneys wrote in the late Monday submitting, including that the states’ proposals had been “unsubstantiated” and “outlandish.”
A complete of 29 states are connected to the lawsuit against Meta, which accuses the company of major violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The laws bars the gathering of data from underage customers without parental consent.
They additional allege that Facebook and Instagram had been designed to be addictive to children, inflicting a wave of points ranging from anxiety and depression to self-harm and even suicide.
California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are also focusing on Meta for allegedly deceptive the public about security dangers.

While the states’ particular proposals stay under seal, plaintiff attorneys said at a court listening to last month that they had been guided by local legal guidelines and the estimated quantity of underage customers in each state who had been affected.
“Our lawsuit alleges Meta has prioritized profits over the safety of kids and fueled the mental health crisis we see impacting a generation of American children,” a spokesperson for the California attorney basic’s workplace said in a assertion. “The California Department of Justice looks forward to holding Meta fully accountable at trial in August.”

Meta shares had been up 3% in trading Tuesday.
