Brushing this off, Ms Bondi continued: “About this endeavour,” which prompted Trump to tilt his head in her direction with his eyes still shut.

He then opened his eyes, when she remarked: “The president knew what was going on here, the president cared.”

But as Trump closed his eyes again, viewers took to social media with fury, as one raged: “Embarrassing. They perform loyalty speeches for him, and he can’t even stay awake long enough to hear them … and that’s the real danger.”

A second echoed: “If he can’t stay awake, how is he supposed to stay in charge?”

Another branded the political occasion, “the most embarrassing administration in history.”

“How embarrassing, I’m so ashamed that he is the president of America! He’s done nothing but cause chaos since he’s been in office,” remarked a fourth.

One enraged viewer posted: “@realDonaldTrump is once again embarrassing the Oval Office. Disgraceful, and they had the audacity to knock President Biden.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s closed eyes garnered also some sympathy: “The man works night and day… Give him a break!”

This comes after the US chief beforehand disputed that he appeared to fall asleep during a briefing in January and claimed that he was merely closing his eyes as it “got pretty boring”.

At the time, Trump addressed a room of journalists and acknowledged: “We’re not going to go through the entire desk because last time we had a press convention it lasted for three hours and some people said ‘he closed his eyes,’ it bought fairly boring in all equity.”
