Netanyahu to award Israel’s highest honor to Trump | Political News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that President Donald Trump might be awarded the Israeli Prize, an honor bestowed by Israel yearly and thought of its highest distinction.

Netanyahu said it was the first time in historical past that the prize was awarded to a non-Israeli citizen.

“We decided to break a convention or create a new one, and that is to award the Israel Prize, which, in almost our 80 years, we’ve never awarded it to a non-Israeli, and we’re going to award it this year to President Trump,” Netanyahu said.

“I have to say that this reflects the overwhelming sentiment of Israelis across the spectrum; they appreciate what you’ve done to help Israel and to help our common battle against the terrorists and those who would destroy our civilization,” Netanyahu added.

The Times of Israel reported that during Trump’s assembly with Netanyahu, he acquired a telephone call from Education Minister Yoav Kisch, who informed him that he had been awarded the Israel Prize.

Israel’s top civilian honor is awarded in a wide selection of classes, but Kisch says Trump will obtain the Israel Prize for Peace, which hasn’t beforehand existed, The Times of Israel reported. In the transient dialog, Trump thanks Kisch and says he’ll take into account attending the Independence Day ceremony in Israel.

According to the Israel Prize rules, printed on the Education Ministry’s web site, it’s unlikely that Trump could be eligible for the award because he’s neither an Israeli citizen nor a resident. The Jerusalem Post reported that the only exception is the Israel Prize for “special contribution toward the Jewish people,” which can probably be used as a justification for the award.

“The candidate or candidates will be citizens of the State of Israel, residents of the country for the last three years prior to the nomination. This is with the exception of candidates for the Israel Prize for Diaspora Jewry and/or for a special contribution to the Jewish people,” reads clause 13.

The following clause states that “In special cases, it will be possible, by decision of the education minister, to award the Israel Prize to residents who have lived in the country for many years and who call this their home, even if they are not citizens.”
