Netflix users outraged at price increase despite | TV Shows

Netflix is hiking its prices, much to the dismay of its subscribers.

The streaming giant, which holds contracts with the NFL, WWE and FIFA, is increasing its monthly subscription cost. Netflix’s ad-supported plan will rise from $6.99 to $7.99, its standard plan will jump from $15.49 to $17.99, and its premium plan will climb from $22.99 to $24.99.

This recent price increase follows the streaming service’s report of a record surge in subscriber numbers, adding 19 million new subscribers in the last quarter of 2024.

The platform received massive success from Squid Game’s second season and the NFL Christmas Day featuring Beyoncé, which saw record-breaking viewership for a live event with over 30 million viewers tuning in. According to the New York times, Netflix recently reported a staggering operating income of over $10 billion, alongside a 16% surge in annual revenue.

Their decision has sparked outrage among customers on social media.

The hike has also spawned criticism regarding content value, with many noting the fleeting lifespan of Netflix originals—shows like Ratched and AJ and the Queen rarely see a second season. Last year alone saw the axing of over 20 series, including Girls5Eva.

Irate viewers are perplexed, with one commenting: “Price goes up and quality of shows goes down. Make it make sense.”

The latest Netflix film, Back in Action, faced harsh feedback, with many calling it “boring” and “sloppy.”

The streaming platform’s previous bump in rates came about just this past October, when they raised the Basic plan from $9.99 to $11.99 and Premium from $19.99 to $22.99.
