Nicolás Maduro accused of authorizing executions | Political News
Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been accused of authorizing the executions of 1,300 people.
The former president, who was ousted from his place when he was captured during a U.S. army raid in January, is presently incarcerated in New York. Maduro was captured on drug prices, but is now going through a civil lawsuit introduced against him by the households of 5 younger males allegedly slain by his order.
The plaintiffs sued under the Torture Victim Protection Act, a 1991 law that permits the submitting of civil fits in U.S. federal court against people accused of committing torture or extrajudicial killings while appearing in an official capability in another nation, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The 5 males, whose households are behind in the lawsuit, have been among some 1,300 people killed by an elite Venezuelan security drive between 2017 and 2020 during a major police surge launched by President Nicolás Maduro, ostensibly to struggle crime, the lawsuit says.
Nearly 10 years later, the households are blaming Maduro for their deaths, submitting a federal lawsuit in the same state where he’s in federal prison.
The killings that are talked about in the lawsuit started after the Maduro regime announced an “Operation to Liberate and Protect the People,” through a collection of militarized campaigns. The operation immediately sparked backlash from human rights organizations.
A report by the U.N. said that Venezuelan security forces killed at least 6,856 people within an 18-month period in 2018 and 2019. They claimed that they altered the crime scenes by planting weapons or medicine and staged cases to make it seem like the victims had resisted arrest.
Weeks after the report was launched, Mauro stood firmly behind the forces, writing in 2019, “All our support to you, logistical and physical. All our support to the FAES in their daily work of providing security to the people. Long live the FAES!”
One lady, whose son was killed in 2017 and who is denoted in the lawsuit only as Jane Doe 1, said, “I’m not asking for anything, I’m demanding. The state killed my son.”
The lawsuit was filed by three moms and a father, as effectively as one lady whose two brothers have been killed during the police operation, the Times reported. To shield them from retaliation, the lawsuit was filed utilizing aliases.
Michael Reed Hurtado, one of the attorneys, said the households are looking for punitive and compensatory damages.
“This complaint reflects the extraordinary determination of the victims’ families to confront abuses of power and affirm that no one is beyond the reach of the law,” Hurtado said.
