Actor and comic Omid Djalili has shut down Owen Jones in a scathing post as he campaigns for Iran’s freedom. In current months, the Ipswich star has given over his social media to the “voiceless”, as he describes them, the Iranians caught in an web blackout imposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Protests had initially been sparked by hovering costs and a collapsing currency, but shortly escalated into nationwide demonstrations demanding adjustments within the federal government.

On Monday (March 16), the Gladiators star took to X – previously Twitter – to raise awareness about the 93million people cut off from the web in the Middle East. It did not take long before the socialist responded to his feedback with a fiery post, which sparked backlash online.

He penned: “What is this man talking about? What does this have to do with him spreading INSANE false claims that the US massacre of Iranian schoolgirls was staged by the Iranian regime, using bodies they’d kept in cold storage?

“This man claims I’m cheering on the Iranian regime. He’s a liar. A shameless lia. This man once – would you consider – campaigned against the Iraq battle. He’s now resusitating the same smears used against the anti-war motion he has reneged on.”

Dad-of-three Omid was fast to shut down the socialist online with a prolonged response. He penned: “You post constantly making an attempt to ‘expose’ me as an Iranian man about a situation Iranians warned us about from inside the nation. So I’ll inform you what this man is speaking about.

“Since the #WomanLifeFreedom movement in 2022, when the regime also shut down the internet, cutting off voices of protest, Iranians inside Iran asked us on the outside to ‘refuse silence and be our voice’.”

He went on: “Rather than be curious about what you quote below and seek further information about who is saying this and why, you tweet that I am somehow insane and spread misinformation.

“My pricey Owen, it’s not your nation. Be a journalist by all means, but it’s overstepping a boundary when talking over Iranians when it would not fit your narrative. It is the epitome of Western privilege and supremacy.”

He concludes: “I do not need you to consider those few voices popping out of Iran under a digital blackout. Simply asking you to stop talking over them.” It didn’t take long before his followers flocked to the comments to share their support online, with one user praising his support online.

One user penned: “Thank you, Omid Djalili, for your steadfast solidarity. Sicne our uni days in 1999, males such as you created protected areas for Iranian ladies to converse fact under risk – foundational allyship we may never maintain alone.”

Others hit out at Owen online, with one user blasting: “Owen is an activist, not a journalist. He backs the facet that suits his ideology, then works out the rationale.” Another agreed: “Owen Jones isn’t a journalist, he is a propagandist who tries to appease so many people that his narratives do not add up. He’ll seemingly block you when the penny drops that he cannot win with this one.”

A third chimed in with: “I’m questioning if it is time to stop giving pricey Owen the eye he craves?” as a fourth echoed: “Be the voice of the people in Iran. Ask your self: why would a authorities shut down the web to its own people when they need it the most, when they need it to obtain evacuation warnings and keep protected? The reply is simple: to silence the bulk.”
