A doctor has been charged in connection with the death of a affected person after allegedly eradicating the incorrect organ during a surgical process.
Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, 44, acknowledged that his affected person William Bryan, 70, started hemorrhaging from an unidentified space during a scheduled laparoscopic splenectomy, a process in which the spleen is eliminated.
The doctor admitted that he “couldn’t tell the difference” between the spleen and liver “because I was so upset,” reviews Daily Express UK.
Shaknovsky confronted legal expenses in connection with the death last month. He made a sworn admission in November during questioning by attorneys representing Bryan’s spouse, Beverly, as documented in a deposition transcript.
Shaknovsky acknowledged that Bryan’s process introduced severe problems, including blood in the stomach and an enlarged colon, which prevented him from figuring out the source of the bleeding.

Meanwhile, other members of the surgical group have been performing chest compressions in an effort to resuscitate Bryan.
“I can’t explain to you what it’s like for a surgeon to lose a patient on a table and how demoralizing it is and how devastating it is,” Shaknovsky said.
“And I couldn’t tell the difference because I was so upset,” he said of eradicating the incorrect organ.
“It’s a devastating thing, which I will have to live with the rest of my life,” he said. “And I think about it every single day.
“That was an extremely unlucky event that I remorse deeply, and I’m endlessly traumatized by it and damage by it,” Shaknovsky said.
Beverly and her husband were vacationing in Florida when Bryan was admitted to Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital after experiencing stomach pain.
Shaknovsky and a fellow physician persuaded him to undergo surgery on August 21, 2024, citing an abnormality in his spleen, according to the lawsuit.
However, Shaknovsky mistakenly removed his liver instead of the spleen, causing “speedy and catastrophic blood loss ensuing in death,” the filing alleged.
The surgeon subsequently had the organ labeled as a spleen, and it was only discovered to be the liver following Bryan’s death, the court documents claimed.
Shaknovsky allegedly attempted to conceal the blunder by informing Beverly that the spleen was so diseased it was four times its normal size and had migrated to the opposite side of Bryan’s body, the suit contended.
The spleen weighs a few pounds less than the liver.
Shaknovsky had his medical license revoked and was arrested last month while working a shift as a Lyft driver, facing charges of second-degree manslaughter.
Authorities allege the physician made a series of deadly mistakes, including switching from laparoscopic to riskier open surgery due to poor visibility. He then severed and stapled clusters of vessels surrounding the liver, triggering severe hemorrhaging and sending Bryan into cardiac arrest, investigators claimed.
Despite the critical nature of the situation, Shaknovsky allegedly failed to summon assistance and subsequently attempted to conceal his mistake by incorrectly identifying the organ as a spleen, according to authorities.
If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars.
This is not Shaknovsky’s first brush with legal trouble, as he previously faced a medical malpractice lawsuit connected to the death of a 70 year old woman who succumbed to sepsis following his removal of a mass during surgery. That case was settled for an undisclosed sum.
Shaknovsky is due to be arraigned on May 19.
