Peace? Putin Indicates Russo-Ukraine War Now

Well, this could be a great Mother’s Day present for a lot of Russian and Ukrainian moms who are nervous about their sons being maimed or killed in the Russo-Ukrainian War; Russia’s Tsar Vladimir Putin, talking to reporters, indicated that the warfare was “nearing completion.” It’s a completion that, if it occurs, will end a battle that has killed, by most estimates, 1.8 million people, making it the most important European battle since 1945. 

Dare we hope? Here’s the phrase from my colleague Scott McClallen at sister website Townhall:

Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters that he thinks the Russia-Ukraine warfare “is coming to an end.” 

The warfare began in February 2022. On Friday, President Donald Trump announced a three-day cease-fire. 

Roughly 1.8 million people have died in the warfare.

Note that Putin appears to go away himself an out, noting that the warfare is “…still a serious thing.”

Russia’s Victory Day Parade: Now With Fewer Tanks and More Copium

The two sides are at the moment in a three-day cease-fire, for Russia’s statement of Victory Day, which marks the end of World War II in Europe, or as they call it in Russia, the Great Patriotic War. President Trump announced the cease-fire in Washington on Friday.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky replied on Friday in his official X account:

He writes, mentioning also a prisoner exchange:

In current days, there have been many appeals and indicators relating to the setup for tomorrow in Moscow in connection with our Ukrainian long-range sanctions. The precept of symmetry in our actions is well-known and has been clearly communicated to the Russian facet. An extra argument for Ukraine in figuring out our place has always been the decision of one of the key humanitarian points of this warfare – particularly, the release of prisoners of warfare. Red Square is less important to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners who might be introduced home. 

That is why today, within the framework of the negotiating course of mediated by the American facet, we obtained Russia’s settlement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11. Ukraine is persistently working to deliver its people home from Russian captivity. I’ve instructed our group to promptly put together all the pieces mandatory for the exchange. 

I thank the President of the United States and his group for their productive diplomatic involvement. We count on the United States to guarantee that the Russian facet fulfills these agreements. Glory to Ukraine!

Here’s what’s not talked about:

First: What will the phrases of any long-term cease-fire be? Will there be a return to the establishment ante? Will Russia hand back any of the Ukrainian territory they now maintain, or will the strains stay in place? As for Crimea, if President Zelensky has any notion of getting Crimea back, all I can say is “fat chance.”

Second: Will this be a cease-fire, or will there be an eventual treaty? Who will mediate between Russia and Ukraine? The European Union? NATO? The United States? Seems to me that this is a European drawback, and Europe ought to work it out.

Anyway, President Putin’s assertion ought to have us cautiously optimistic, but bear in mind, we have been cautiously optimistic before, only to have issues blow up again. And, once more, we must bear in mind George Santayana’s warning: Only the useless have seen the end of warfare.
