Pride and Prejudice stays a beloved traditional of cinema, with its ensemble forged incomes widespread reward, but one of its stars once admitted they felt they weren’t proper for their position. “I kept trying to quit that damn job,” Sutherland revealed in a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone. “Joe wouldn’t let me! ‘Joe, goddammit, I’m not right for this, why the f*** did you hire me for this?’ ‘You’re fine, you can do it.'”
And Sutherland turned out to be grateful for Wright’s persistence, admitting: “It’s one of my favourite things out all the movies I’ve done.”
Speaking during the movie’s press tour in 2005, Sutherland had nothing but reward for his co-stars, notably those who performed his on-screen daughters.
The actor, who died aged 88 in 2024 after a prolonged sickness, said: “You’ve no idea when you come into a picture, what Keira Knightley is going to be like. And it turns out, she is as extraordinary an actor as I’ve ever met in my life.
“Rosamund was… it’s indescribable, how ethereally stunning she was. Tallulah [Riley], just… I embraced her. Carey… They have been like youngsters. And Jena [Malone], she just grew to become this foolish baby.
“They were wonderful, it was just a wonderful family. Petted and embraced and supported, and catalysed by Brenda Blethyn.”
He wrote: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.
“He beloved what he did and did what he beloved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life effectively lived.”
