Zak Starkey is engulfed in a whirlwind of bewilderment concerning his place with rock legends The Who, candidly admitting he “doesn’t know what the f–k is happening.”

As the 59-year-old drummer ricochets through a tumultuous yr with the band – experiencing being axed, reinstated, and cut free once more – he is embracing the chaotic rhythm of life within what he dubs the “oddest, maddest group there is.”

Chatting with The Independent, Zak, who has been on percussion obligation for The Who since 1996, aired his uncertainty, “I don’t know what the f–k is happening.”

He then unpacked his ideas, “The thing is, this is The Who, man. The most unpredictable, aggressive, arrogant people, lovely people who are my family, but you never know what’s gonna happen, and that’s why it’s The Who. They have an addiction to friction.”

Pondering The Who’s storied saga, he noticed, “If you look at The Who through the years, all the way back, there’s four completely opposite people. One of them writes all the songs and thinks the other three are an art installation. And they don’t know what that means. Starkey concluded with a notion of admiration for the band’s unorthodox method, noting, “That’s what’s great, isn’t it, that they’re so untraditional with everything that they’ve ever done.”

Zak, who was the drummer for Oasis from 2004 to 2008, spilled the beans on his close to involvement with their much-anticipated reunion tour. He admitted that while there have been talks with Noel, his dedication to The Who took priority, saying, “It was discussed with Noel, but I was in The Who.”

During his youth, Zak initially shunned his father’s legendary music but skilled a seismic shift in appreciation at 25.

He recounted his musical awakening with awe, “like a wall. Can’t get over it. Can’t get through it, can’t get under it…When I was 25, I listened to The Beatles and went, ‘F—–g hell, these guys were amazing. I should have been listening to this years ago.’ And then I got over it.”

Despite Ringo Starr’s colossal fame, Zak at all times considered him through the lens of a son. Reflecting on his relationship with his father, he shared, “My dad, to me, is this: my dad is chasing me down the garden, going, ‘If I get my hands on you, I’ll bloody kill you.’ That’s my dad. My dad. He changed the world, he was in The Beatles. See him on TV, get a bit misty at that.

“But he is my dad, and that’s how I keep in mind those years. Like everybody’s dad, he is a dad, innee.”
