Rory McIlroy shall be hoping for victory on the Masters this week – and his eyes shall be firmly on the inexperienced jacket, which might help him full the profession Grand Slam. However, the golf star has confronted criticism for being “distracted” on the inexperienced as he ended up with a disappointing opening spherical.

For a player who likes to play quickly, it was a drop in concentration,” McGinley said. “And that is what great champions don’t do. And I am sure that the 17th was a legacy of it.”

It is going to be a “long way back” for McIlroy, the Ryder Cup champion told viewers. “No-one will be beating himself up more than him. It has got to be gut-wrenching for him.”

Last year, McIlroy won events in New Orleans, Charlotte, and Dubai, and finished runner-up in the US Open, behind Bryson DeChambeau. He also competed in the Olympics for the second time and secured his sixth season-long points title on the DP World Tour. 

After the opening round, McIlroy didn’t speak to the press and instead headed straight to the practice range. If he completes the career Grand Slam, it would see him join the likes of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
