Rory McIlroy has shed mild on his choice to dodge the press after each spherical at the PGA Championship, as he gears up for his return this week.

After opting out of final week’s Memorial Tournament for a breather, McIlroy is teeing off again at the RBC Canadian Open, a event where he is tasted victory twice. This marks his first look since a less-than-stellar efficiency at the PGA.

In Charlotte, consideration was drawn away from his play and in direction of his tools, as McIlroy had to swap out his driver when it did not go a routine USGA inspection at Quail Hollow.

Now, with the Masters title and a accomplished profession Grand Slam under his belt, McIlroy confronted the media in Toronto on Wednesday. He detailed varied causes for his silence in Charlotte, recounting to journalists: “The PGA was a bit of a weird week.

“I did not play effectively. I did not play effectively the first day, so I needed to go follow, so that was nice. Second day we completed late. I needed to go back and see Poppy [his daughter] before she went to mattress. The driver information broke. I did not actually need to converse on that.”

“Saturday, I used to be supposed to tee off at 8:20 in the morning. I did not tee off until virtually 2:00 in the afternoon, one other late end, I used to be just drained, and needed to go home. Then Sunday, I just needed to get on the airplane and go back to Florida.”

The media blackout at the PGA left him unable to discuss his non-conforming driver, but McIlroy wasn’t alone in this equipment snafu. Following his win, Scottie Scheffler disclosed that his driver failed the same test.

Speaking about the controversy surrounding his driver, McIlroy expressed frustration over the leak, emphasizing that such test results are intended to be private. “On the driving force stuff… I used to be a little p—– off because I knew that Scottie’s driver had failed on Monday, but my identify was the one that was leaked.

“It was supposed to stay confidential. Two members of the media were the ones who leaked it. Again, I didn’t want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either.

“I’m making an attempt to defend Scottie. I do not need to point out his identify. I’m making an attempt to defend TaylorMade. I’m making an attempt to defend the USGA, PGA of America, myself. I just did not need to get up there and say one thing that I regretted at the time.”

“With Scottie’s stuff, that’s not my data to share. I knew that that had occurred, but that’s not on me to share that, and I felt that course of is meant to be saved confidential, and it wasn’t for whatever cause. That’s why I used to be fairly irritated at that.”

McIlroy, known for his candidness with the press, clarified that unless it’s a mandatory rule to speak with the media post-round, players are within their rights to opt out.

“From a duty standpoint, look, I perceive, but if we all needed to, we might all bypass you guys and we might just go on this and we might go on social media and we might speak about our spherical and do it our own approach.

“We understand that that’s not ideal for you guys, and there’s a bigger dynamic at play here, and I talk to you guys and I talk to the media a lot… I’ve been beating this drum for a long time.

“If they need to make it obligatory, that’s nice, but in our guidelines it says that it is not, and until the day that that’s possibly written into the laws, you are going to have guys skip from time to time, and that’s effectively within our rights.”
