Russia face new EU sanctions as peace talks with | Political News

The European Union is planning a nineteenth bundle of sanctions against Russia as it continues to reject ceasefire offers in Ukraine, according to EU diplomat Kaja Kallas.

“As far as Russia has not agreed to a full and unconditional ceasefire, we should not even discuss any concessions,” Kallas said in a assertion obtained by the Kyiv Independent. “The sequencing of the steps is important. First an unconditional ceasefire with a strong monitoring system and ironclad security guarantees,” she added.

“We will work on a 19th package of sanctions,” Kallas added.

The assertion from Kallas comes after the European Union’s July 18 sanctions bundle, which it called “one of its strongest” sanctions against Russia yet.

On Monday, President Donald Trump said he’ll know if Putin is in an unconditional ceasefire with Ukraine within the “first two minutes” of their assembly, which is set to happen in Alaska.

“At the end of that meeting, probably the first two minutes, I’ll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made,” Trump said. He added that the dialog could be “really a feel-out meeting,” saying,” It’ll be good, but it might be bad.”

Trump also detailed that he may tell Putin, “Lots of luck, keep fighting. Or I may say, we can make a deal.” The meeting is not set to include Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, as Trump famous that Ukraine‘s president had attended “a lot of conferences” without efficiently stopping a struggle initiated by Russia.

He pointed out that Zelensky has been in power throughout the conflict and claimed “nothing occurred” during his tenure, contrasting this with Putin’s long-standing rule in Russia.

Following his assembly with Putin, Trump said, “The next assembly will probably be with Zelenskyy and Putin” but it could also involve “Putin and Zelensky and me.” European allies have advocated for Ukraine‘s participation, concerned that negotiations might otherwise benefit Moscow.

In response, Trump said he would contact Zelensky and European leaders after his talk with Putin to “inform them what variety of a deal — I’m not going to make a deal. It’s not up to me to make a deal.”
