A senior Russian official has stated Moscow may offer political asylum to Elon Musk amid a public spat between the tech billionaire and US President Donald Trump.
The pair’s close relationship collapsed on Thursday, after they traded heated barbs on social media. Musk complained about Trump’s huge spending invoice, while the president threatened to cut the SpaceX CEO’s authorities contracts.
Dmitry Novikov, Russia’s first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, stated Friday that if Musk needed political asylum, Russia may offer it.
“I think that Musk is playing a completely different game and he will not be needing any political asylum, although if he did, Russia, of course, could provide it,” Novikov instructed Russia state media outlet TASS.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the pair’s feud as “a domestic issue of the United States, and we don’t intend to interfere.”
“We’re confident the US president will handle this situation on his own,” he stated.
Musk was a close advisor of President Trump and donated more than $250 million to back his election marketing campaign.
His function with the Trump administration ended final Friday, with the president presenting Musk with a golden key during a farewell press convention at the Oval Office.
