Tyrrell Hatton revealed the personal attacks he endured from Ryder Cup spectators in New York, following Rory McIlroy’s highly effective assertion about his companion Erica Stoll’s expertise.

The forty fifth version of the distinguished event unfolded over the weekend, and despite Team Europe sustaining a commanding benefit, Keegan Bradley’s Team USA mounted a final-day surge that almost sparked a dramatic turnaround. Shane Lowry in the end sealed victory for the Europeans.

While the battle between Team USA and Team Europe was intense, the treatment some American spectators directed toward the European squad proved even more heated, with a number of incidents of disorderly conduct. Several Team Europe members voiced their considerations about fan habits in New York, including Lowry and Justin Rose, who provided their views on the state of affairs.

Hatton has now described his expertise at Bethpage. “Well I believe most of the people in New York have commented on my height and receding hairline, so that was most of the stuff that I had to listen to and whatever, or being called a sellout,” Hatton said after the win.

“But at the end of the day, it’s words. I feel like I personally did a really good job, certainly Friday and Saturday, of not really reacting to anything. I’d say I struggled a bit more yesterday, just with all of a sudden you’re back to being an individual for the day and a little bit more pressure on the line and I probably struggled to control my emotions throughout the round.

“I believe that was just heightened by every part that was going on.” The 33-year-old also expressed gratitude that his family wasn’t subjected to the abuse, unlike some of his teammates.

“I do know a few of the other guys have skilled that and that’s a disgrace,” he continued. “I assume it is unlucky. I believe people just overlook that you’re also just regular people at the end of the day and everybody has household and stuff strolling around, so it is not good for anybody to hear that stuff.

“But those guys did an unbelievable job in how they performed and how family dealt with everything as well as we did.”

The LIV Golf star also prompt that alcohol may need contributed to followers crossing the road and behaving however they wished, regardless of their circumstances. “You’d like to think that most people know where the line is. Unfortunately, when you have a bit too much to drink, I guess people lose that boundary,” Hatton concluded.

“It was funny. I was on the ninth fairway on Friday morning and all of a sudden there was a countdown. I was like: What’s going on? And they’re 10 down to 1 because the bar was opening, which was hilarious.

“And then it was the same again on Saturday morning. I used to be strolling down the seventh fairway. It’s exhausting.

“Once people start having a few drinks and a bit of Dutch courage, and people say anything and maybe don’t fear the consequences, you’re not thinking clearly at that moment.”

The upcoming Ryder Cup is set to happen at Adare Manor in two years. However, Hatton, one of the key gamers, will not be half of the staff if his ongoing dispute with the DP World Tour is not resolved in time.
