After dropping the match, Oliynykova wore a white t-shirt that read: “I need your help to protect Ukrainian children and women, but I can’t talk about it here.”

An official for Tennis Australia confirmed that the assertion did not violate any guidelines, but in an interview with The Age, Oliynykova claimed that tennis gamers from Russia and Belarus ought to be banned. “I think it’s very wrong that they are not disqualified in tennis like in other sports,” Oliynykova said.

“Because I know that here is the picture that we are, like all tennis girls playing, but the people don’t see the things behind it. And this is, you know, the people with money and power, and they are using this to support aggression against my country.

“They are the explanation the people like this who have the facility to converse up against they aren’t doing this.” Sabalenka broke her silence after beating Zhuoxuan Bai in the second round, insisting she wants peace but isn’t looking to discuss politics at the Australian Open.

“Well, I’ve spoken a lot about that before. Obviously, I need peace,” Sabalenka said. If I could change anything, I would definitely do that.

“Other than that, I’ve nothing else to say.” Sabalenka then shut down a follow-up question. “Listen, I’m right here for tennis, it’s a tennis event. I’ve said it enough in the past, I just don’t need to discuss politics right here.”

Oliynykova also said that Sabalenka signed a letter supporting Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in 2020, years before Russia invaded Ukraine. She was asked at the 2023 French Open to comment on her endorsement.

After initially refusing to comment on politics, Sabalenka later changed her stance, claiming her views had shifted. “I don’t help battle. I don’t help Lukashenko proper now,” Sabalenka said.
