Sacramento’s Plot to Shove High-Rises Into Your

California Democrats are once again displaying us who they actually work for — and it’s not householders, renters, or native communities.

Senate Bill 79 (SB 79), authored by State Sen. Scott Wiener, marks the Democrats’ most brazen assault yet on native control, property rights, and the material of neighborhoods. The invoice would compel cities and counties to greenlight high-density housing developments on practically any parcel zoned for single-family properties if it’s within half a mile of a public transit stop, even if that’s just a bus stop.

There are no limits on building measurement, no enforceable mandates to embody inexpensive housing, and no significant manner for residents or their elected officers to block these developments.

SB 79 follows the identical playbook: strip native decision-making, impose one-size-fits-all guidelines, and push a narrative that anybody who disagrees should hate renters or be anti-equity.

But opposition to SB 79 isn’t just coming from suburban householders and metropolis councils — it’s coming from the very communities this invoice purports to help.

The People Are Pushing Back

Tenant advocacy teams and anti-displacement networks have lined up against SB 79. Groups just like the Western Center on Law & Poverty, the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, and Public Advocates have all spoken out. These organizations have long fought for inexpensive housing and tenant rights — but even they acknowledge SB 79 is a Trojan horse.

This isn’t nitpicking — it’s common sense. You can’t declare to help the susceptible while stranding them on a hillside with no sidewalk.

Here’s one other huge purple flag: SB 79 provides no group oversight and no appeal course of. Under this invoice, cities and counties should approve qualifying initiatives ministerially — that means no public hearings, no environmental review, and no likelihood for residents to push back.

No vetting of visitors chaos. No dialogue about emergency response delays. No analysis of crumbling infrastructure.

When requested about these native impacts, invoice supporters disguise behind the drained buzzword “streamline.” But let’s be actual: this isn’t streamlining. It’s steamrolling.

SB 79 doesn’t just loosen guidelines — it eliminates single-family zoning across large components of California, all without a shred of democratic course of.

And who actually wins right here? Not renters, not seniors, not first-time homebuyers.

It’s the well-connected builders, land hoarders, and Wall Street financiers who’ll snap up ageing properties, bulldoze them, and shove market-rate high-rises into neighborhoods — leaving displaced households in the mud.

This invoice isn’t about equity. It isn’t about affordability. It’s a energy play wrapped in “housing crisis” rhetoric, designed to strip communities of their most elementary proper: self-governance.

SB 79 Is a Declaration of War on Local Democracy
