Ted Scott demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship where U.S. Open spectators fell short, greeting Wyndham Clark with a heartfelt embrace immediately following his victory at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Clark endured a brutal reception from the Long Island crowd; subjected to relentless heckling, with his errors celebrated and his tee pictures routinely urged toward the bunkers.

The USGA was compelled to take away a number of followers for their disruptive conduct directed at the eventual champion. Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Scott, watched the drama play out up close and had great admiration for Clark’s capacity to grind through the hostile surroundings. In the aftermath of Clark’s victory, Scott pulled him into a firm embrace and was visibly seen passionately whispering one thing into the winner’s ear.

Reflecting on the second, and whether or not Scheffler had provided any phrases, Clark said: “Scottie, we’re friends, and he’s a class act. He just told me, congrats and great playing. Ted, he went out of his way to say, hey, that was — took a lot of grit. No one was really pulling for you, and to battle through and win that was impressive. So that’s what he said.”

Clark himself addressed the gang’s hostility and how he managed to overcome it to declare a second U.S. Open title. “Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” he said. “It’s pretty rare in an Open Championship or a major to have fans kind of boo against your shots or cheer for bad shots.

“Yeah, I imply, that was robust, but I also like — I imply, sometimes being the underdog is sweet. I used to be in ’23, and I sort of did the same factor. Anytime somebody said one thing damaging to me, I changed it with one thing optimistic. You know, some of it is self-deserved. I sort of introduced it on myself, but I also get it, too. Scottie was going for the profession Grand Slam, and it hasn’t occurred very often.

“Yeah, it was tough, but I’m proud of myself that I battled through. I mean, things really could have gotten away from me. I stood tough. Yeah, I would have liked to have won by more, but as long as you win, it doesn’t matter.” When questioned about the disorderly conduct from spectators, Scheffler indicated it had gone too far.

“I mean, the crowd was tough today,” he said. “I mean, New Yorkers, they are tough people. There was a good turnout from the fans. You like seeing the fans cheer for you. I think sometimes it can get a little too much when, you know, balls are kind of going off greens and you start hearing cheers. That felt a bit much to me.” He subsequently declined to elaborate additional on the subject.
