Scottie Scheffler agrees with Rory McIlroy on golf | Golf News

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have both endorsed Luke Donald’s resolution to serve as European captain for a third consecutive Ryder Cup.

Donald orchestrated Europe’s triumphs over Team USA in Rome and New York, and he’ll attempt to grow to be the first captain to secure the trophy thrice consecutively when he leads the crew at Adare Manor in the Republic of Ireland next 12 months. His appointment was announced on Wednesday.

The PGA of America has not yet named its captain for the competition in Limerick, with discussions persevering with with Tiger Woods about assuming the place. Woods declined the prospect to captain Team USA at Bethpage Black last 12 months, and he has voiced reservations about his capability to fulfill the duty for 2027.

McIlroy, a six-time Ryder Cup champion, was instrumental for Donald at Marco Simone and Bethpage, and the world No. 2 considers Donald’s return wonderful news for the Europeans.

“It’s amazing. I think it’s obviously a huge advantage for the European team to have that continuity and that consistency,” he said. “I was sort of banging on that drum going into Bethpage. And we’ll have it even more so again. The team may be a little bit different, or it could be. I was obviously really similar to Bethpage to what it was in Rome. I maybe envision a couple other guys maybe breaking their way on to the team.

“But it is fantastic to have Luke back. There’s not one participant or one particular person behind the scenes that helps with Ryder Cup Europe that is not thrilled that Luke agreed to come back and do it again.”

World No. 1 Scheffler, who has been defeated in two of his three Ryder Cup appearances, believes Donald was the clear choice for Europe.

“I hadn’t seen something on that. But he is had some fairly good outcomes the last two Cups, and clearly, I feel we’ll be hoping to change that when we go over to Ireland next 12 months,” Scheffler said. “Obviously, he is had a lot of success, and he is fairly good at it, so if I had been the European crew, I might most likely be attempting to persuade him to come back as nicely.”

McIlroy disclosed that he and Donald, both residents of Jupiter, Florida, mentioned the “professionals and cons” as Donald considered his options. He added: “Luke and I are neighbors. We live on the same road, so we see each other fairly a bit. Yeah, we had fairly a few talks before the new 12 months.

“I haven’t had a chance to really talk to him about much afterwards, but I know that he was having discussions with the DP World Tour and Ryder Cup Europe, just getting things buttoned up on his side.

“It’s a big-time dedication. He places a lot into it. But he is put his golf profession on maintain for six years to do this. So he has to really feel like every little thing else that’s going on is correct. And [his wife] Diane has to be into it, the children have to be into it.

“It’s a lot more than just his decision, at the end of the day. It’s a big, it’s a massive part of your life. Especially with the time commitment that he puts into it, because he is so thorough on everything that he does.

“When we talked, we kind of tried to go through the professionals and cons and what could be the drawbacks, and I feel at the end of the day, we all see the chance for him to go down as the best Ryder Cup captain ever, if we go on and win in Ireland. So I’m excited for him, I’m excited for the chance that he has, and clearly, I would like to be a half of that crew to help him strive to make that historical past.”
