Simon Calder issues urgent travel warning as chaos | UK News
Journalist Simon Calder has warned of major travel disruption triggered by the UK heatwave. Appearing on GB News on Tuesday, the broadcaster famous that practice journeys in explicit had been affected.
“As we’ve been hearing in the forecast, it’s most definitely warming up,” he told viewers. “This is really just part of a whole heatwave scenario which yesterday saw more than two dozen cancellations on the line between London St. Pancras International and Sheffield via Derby and Nottingham. I’m sorry to say that this morning, that line is disrupted from Chesterfield and Sheffield because of emergency services attending an incident there.
“You can anticipate more cancellations on that line. They say it’s due to the heatwave. Also, on the Great Western line – this is the one that connects London Paddington to the west of England and south Wales – there’s a quantity of issues that are affecting the road.
“In particular, the train operator, GWR, is saying ‘We are not going to be switching the points’ – those are the things which, of course, move the trains from one track to the other – on the main line between London and Reading, because in the hot weather they are more likely to break.”
Calder added that as a consequence, anybody travelling from Newbury or Didcot Parkway would probably have a a lot slower journey today. Noting that with heatwaves, there’s always a high risk of thunderstorms too, the GB News star revealed that past the UK, town of Catania in Italy is going through major travel disruption from the heat.
“In Sicily, that airport has been closed for the last 36 hours because of volcanic ash from Mount Etna,” Calder explained. “We’ve had a whole lot of diversions, a couple of flights going in from Manchester and from London this morning, which hopefully will be able to touch down and people will be able to enjoy their holidays. More to the point, there are several people I’ve been hearing from in lovely Sicily, who will [hopefully] be able to get on a plane and come home at the end of their trip.”
