Solemn Moment of Silence at Sydneys Iconic New | Political News

One of the most iconic elements of New Year’s Eve every 12 months is the spectacular sights and sounds of the colourful fireworks show in Sydney, with the gorgeous backdrop of the Australian metropolis’s Harbour Bridge and ultra-modern Opera House.

It’s one of the first locations to ring in the new 12 months, of course, so it only is sensible to count on a big bang (actually) to usher in 2026.

But as readers know, in latest weeks, Australia suffered a mass taking pictures at Bondi Beach on Dec. 14 (the first night time of Hanukkah, a terrorist assault that killed 17 and wounded others, who had been celebrating the Jewish pageant of lights.

It was rapidly evident that this assault was impressed by hate and antisemitism.

That’s one thing Australia’s own prime minister, Anthony Albanese, a far leftist, has refused to acknowledge, saying in latest days, despite the needs of victims’ households, that any more than a cursory investigation wouldn’t serve the “national interest,” as my colleague Becky Noble wrote.

Goodness and indicators of gentle had been seen even in the early hours and days after the Bondi Beach assault, though, as tales filtered out on the unlikely on a regular basis heroes who saved the heinous assault from being any worse. Another means the therapeutic started for the family members of those misplaced, and survivors, was the world’s response—beginning with a solemn, prayerful second in D.C. that same night time.

A few personal notes float up in my thoughts as I write on this:

When I used to be but a teenager, during a school-sponsored Easter-time journey to Europe, I had the chance to go to the museum on the outskirts of Munich, Germany, where the Dachau focus camp was. The images and remnants displaying the evils of males just such as you and me still hang-out me, as do the etched phrases positioned there for every future human being to read and perceive: Never Again. Some of those images are in the clip below. This U.S. Army hero was there too:

On a lighter observe, this is a movie connecting the past and the future, with a heap full of gentle. Once again, I urge you to take in David, an partaking and enjoyable story from the Old Testament (and as Christians, our Jewish cousins), in residing coloration on the silver screen, as I wrote in a VIP column:

Fast-forward to tonight in Sydney. Ahead of the countdown to 2026, and cacophony of explosions and kaleidoscopic celestial glitter, there was first a second of silence. The individuals didn’t just stare into the darkness, though.

Bringing to thoughts a menorah, it started with a show of white lights, beginning with the Harbour Bridge displaying the symbolic dove, and the phrases “unity” and “peace,” then at 11 PM, onlookers for the fireworks acquired into the act:

Before Australia entered 2026, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit up in white as a image of peace and unity, and people turned their cellphone torches on to shine a gentle across the harbour in commemoration of the Bondi shootings.

Watch:

Then the celebration acquired back on observe, as the Australians always appear to know how to do, with the standard countdown and gorgeous fireworks (which lasted about quarter-hour).

My guess is that the people who witnessed the solemn second will bear in mind it for many more years than the blasts of radiant coloration that adopted, seconds later, in Sydney’s skies.

Happy New Year 2026, readers! May the turning of the web page carry you and yours prosperity, peace, and love.
