Ed Miliband was left stuttering as he confronted a quantity of questions from the public about heating oil and LPG. The Secretary of State for Energy joined the presenter on the latest instalment of The Martin Lewis Money Show, an episode devoted to all issues diesel, petrol costs, heating oil and power.
Labour just lately announced that £53 million funds will likely be allotted across the UK to help people struggling with the price rises. Miliband explained that “vulnerable people” will likely be entitled to the funds, which they will declare by making use of through their local authorities.
When requested which weak people will likely be eligible, Miliband responded: “That’s going to be a matter for local authorities. One of the things we’ve thought about is how do we get the money out the door quickly. We’ve learnt from the last crisis it took nearly 200 days to get a scheme up and running so local authorities tend to know their populations.
“We have not specified it is only people on means-tested advantages for instance. We are going to depart it to the discretion of local authorities and I hope and consider they are going to look sympathetically at people.
The politician’s responses failed to fulfill many viewers, with one commenting on X: “He’s just waffling. If you want it, you’ll have to pay through the nose for it.”
“Recorded and scripted interview,” claimed a second as a third weighed in: “Ed Miliband is a joke of an MP he has no idea what he is doing. Do you agree?”
Another added: “Go beg your council is the only answer apparently.”
Someone else said: “Vulnerable is too vague. It might be a family with two working parents but high outgoings. I agree it needs to be taken out of the hands of councils – ours will give it to those on means tested benefits who already get help. We’re in N Ireland and struggling.”
Another identified: “Come on we all know that if you ask your local council for help that they will come back with a short sharp NO.”
Martin raised a Facebook person’s concern about utilizing local councils, revealing theirs is “strapped for cash” and will seemingly end up excluding many people in financial issue.
The presenter requested: “What are you going to do if councils are too strict?” To which the Labour MP replied: “We’ll tell the councils to make them less strict. We will obviously have to judge this as it goes ahead and we will be looking to hear feedback from you and others and individuals about their circumstances and whether they’ve got the help.”
Another social media person requested: “Why is it the government feels obliged to defend themselves using the price cap for lowering energy bills for all and yet when it comes to LPG and heating oil, they accept that only means-tested will get any forms of protection.”
“Why are you only helping the few, not the many?” the Good Morning Britain star requested. Miliband insisted: “We’re not restricting this to just people on means tested benefits.”
Martin interjected: “But it’s not universal, is it?”
The stuttering minister responded: “It.. It’s not universal. We’ve got the CMA (Competition’s and Markets Authority) involved and they’re looking intensively at what’s happened in the sector.”
Gathering his phrases, Miliband added: “I’ve been very clear. We cannot have unfair practice. We are determined to act on those things in the longer term through regulation, but also through the work of the CMA.”
