ITV has launched a choice of first-look photographs for new heist thriller Frauds starring Gentleman Jack’s Suranne Jones and Doctor Who actress Jodie Whittaker.

The pair play complicated duo Bert and Sam, whose intertwined previous resurfaces in the setting of Southern Spain after a decade of separation due to a prison sentence.

The synopsis teases: “As Sam has sought a low-key life, Bert’s release from a Spanish prison for compassionate reasons reignites her ambition for one final, significant score.

“On the pretext of one final, multi-million-pound art heist, Bert attempts to lure Sam out of retirement, but at what cost? 

“Can Sam stay one step ahead of her former friend, who is clearly capable of treachery? Or will the push and pull of their toxic friendship see them both ruined before they are able to pull off the job?”

The six-part sequence, directed by Giulia Gandini (The Split) and produced by Pat Tookey-Dickson (Toxic Town) picks up with Sam anxiously ready for Bert to be launched from prison on grounds of compassionate discharge.

Frail and dealing with her remaining days following a cancer diagnosis, Bert’s mindset is as it’s all the time been, to take dangers and dwell life on the sting.  

With no one else to flip to, and locked into her fierce friendship despite a sense of distrust, Bert convinces Sam to give her a mattress in her idyllic Spanish cottage, set in the picturesque mountainous area.

But she’s soon pulled back into their complicated and addictive relationship, returning to the life she once knew with Bert.

The solid also consists of Talisa Garcia, Christian Cooke, Elizabeth Berrington and Karan Gill, alongside Nansi Nsue, Lee Boardman, Abdul Salis, Thais Martin, Kate Fleetwood and Javier Taboada.

Co-creator Suranne beforehand shared: “Working on Frauds with Anne-Marie and Monumental for the last 2 years has been a wild ride. We took the idea of toxic female friendship and turned it on its head to give the heist genre an emotional heartbeat.

“I have always wanted to work with Jodie, and now I am. I hope you love Bert and Sam and all they get up to as much as we do.”

Writer Anne-Marie O’Connor added: “Suranne and I wanted to take a look at the importance and fierceness of female friendship and to do it using the propulsive heist genre. I am thrilled to be working with Monumental again, and having Jodie joining us alongside Suranne is a dream.”

Frauds will air on ITV1 and ITVX later this yr.
