Terence Crawford stripped of world title just days | Boxing News
Terence Crawford has misplaced his WBA super-welterweight title to Abass Baraou, it has been confirmed. Wasserman Boxing, Baraou’s promoter, confirmed the news on social media. After Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez to grow to be the undisputed super-middleweight champion, his 13-month reign holding the WBA super-welterweight title comes to an end.
Having informed the major sanctioning physique of his determination not to return to the weight class, interim title-holder Baraou was promoted to full world champion standing. Wasserman Boxing wrote: “Abass Baraou is full world champion. Seat at the top table confirmed for AB, who would you like to see him fight next?”
German boxer Baraou, who gained the interim title with a win against Yoenis Tellez, joins Sebastian Fundora (WBC), Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF) and Xander Zayas (WBO) as one of the 4 title-holders in the division.
The WBA’s ‘champion-in-recess’ Jermell Charlo is the obligatory challenger who Baraou has been ordered to battle. Former undisputed champion Charlo has not fought since shedding to Canelo on factors in the super-middleweight division in September 2023.
But the 35-year-old will return to battle at 154lbs unless Errol Spence Jr will get in the best way. There have been talks for Charlo to face Spence Jr – who has not fought since July 2023 when he was stopped by Crawford – early in 2026.
Crawford, meanwhile, is the first three-weight undisputed king of the trendy period and addressed rumours that he may retire after beating Canelo. “I don’t know [if this is the last fight of my career],” he said. “I’ve got to sit down with my team and we’ll talk about it.”
The American’s coach Brian McIntyre, talking to Fight Hub TV, steered that he won’t dangle up his gloves just yet.
“Of course,” ‘Bomac’ replied of the 37-year-old. “I’d like to see him get some rest, spend some time with his family. Holidays are coming up, maybe do a little traveling, then get back in the gym and assess where he’s at after that.
“He’s a rattling good fighter. I like working with him. If he says, ‘Let’s go two, three more instances,’ let’s go two, three more instances.”
Chris Eubank Jr has meanwhile opened the door to a super-fight with Crawford, the holder of all 4 titles at 168lbs. He told Sky Sports: “Anything may be made. It would not matter how unbelievable or incredible a battle may be that you suppose will never occur, something may be made.
“I wouldn’t say so. I said after the fight, I’d love to share the ring with Terence. He’s seen as one of the pound-for-pound greats in the sport right now. I’m here to fight the big names. A fight with him, a fight with Canelo, I would love to share the ring with these guys.”
