A romantic drama series, infamous for its gut-wrenching storyline, is leaving Netflix soon. The heartbreaking series, based on a best-selling novel, will go away the streaming platform next month, on 14 July.

Normal People is based on the 2018 novel of the same identify by Sally Rooney. The restricted series was launched two years after the book’s publication, in 2020. The restricted series has since gone on to win 19 awards and 52 nominations. However, those who hope to watch the series before it leaves Netflix ought to do so soon, with 12 episodes to watch.

The series first premiered on BBC Three, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as the prosperous but remoted Marianne Sheridan and Paul Mescal as the high-achieving but anxious Connell Waldron.

The book and TV series observe the pair through the highs and lows of their relationship in high college and college.

The series acquired immensely constructive reviews after its release with Paul Mescal nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards and profitable at the 67th British Academy Television Awards.

Set in a fictional city in Ireland, the series was filmed in Dublin and, later, in Central Italy.

Discussing the difference of her book, Sally Rooney has since said she “felt [the TV] world was not where I belonged”.

Speaking to the NYT, she said: “The experience of working on [Normal People] had been, in so many ways, amazing – the team of people involved in it”.

But she said that it “did also feel like a really big job”.

She continued: “Then, when the show was broadcast, that felt like a lot in terms of the amount of discourse that it generated and the amount of media attention. I felt like, OK, now I know that my books are where I belong, and that’s all that I want to be doing.”

The Normal People TV series has scored a profitable 91 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.4 stars on IMDb.

Since its release, the series has also blown up on social media.

One Reddit fan wrote: “I absolutely loved it, watched it in less than a day. It was beautiful and even considering rewatching again it was that good.”

Another said: “This show is so good. I finished this in one sitting and felt so many emotions from it. It depicted the pain we usually get from being love, the reality of difficult relationship with family, and dealing with trauma and depression.”

The show explores troublesome topics like emotional abuse, depression and poisonous relationship dynamics. The series is still accessible to watch on BBC iPlayer.
