Jay Blades, who once hosted the beloved BBC sequence The Repair Shop, has claimed he has been left “unable to work” since dealing with allegations of rape. Blades, 55, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court via video hyperlink this morning (Wednesday, September 10) to deny two counts of rape.
Susan Meek, who was defending Blades, said he had been unable to work since the allegations surfaced, including: “It is an extraordinarily long time for him not to be able to work.” The London-born presenter’s trial is not going to happen until next September. During the listening to, which lasted just over 20 minutes, Judge Anthony Lowe expressed his remorse at the “backlog” that is inflicting a great delay to Blades’ trial.
“I understand the application you make, Ms Meek, but the reality is, perhaps with the press’s attention on this case, it will at least bring it more to the public domain – the chronic position we are in, in relation to the backlog,” the Judge acknowledged to the court.
Blades has been granted conditional bail until his trial is scheduled for September 2027.
The choose told the previous TV star, who lives in Claverley, Shropshire, that the matter could have to be determined by a jury.
He added: “I am sorry to say that that will not take place for effectively over two years – until September 20, 2027. I regret that. Not as much as you do but I do regret it.
“It will not be a correct justice system where people are having to wait that size of time for their trial but I’m afraid there may be just nothing I can do. That, I’m afraid, is just the state of where we’re with excellent trials.”
However, the Judge did say the timing of the trial might change, but it can rely on other circumstances.
Blades, who began internet hosting The Repair Shop in 2017, stepped back from presenting last 12 months.
Aside from internet hosting the show, he is appeared on Celebrity Bake Off, Comic Relief and Celebrity MasterChef.
A case management listening to, which the defendant doesn’t have to attend, will happen on May 15 next 12 months.
