There's one thing about The Sandman that feels 25 years outdated, and never merely as a result of the comics from Neil Gaiman ended 26 years in the past. The new Netflix collection looks like a time-traveler from some cultural second between the mid-'90s and late 2000s, and its titular protagonist hearkens again to all the pale, brooding, attractive sad-boys of movie and tv — David Boreanaz in Buffy and Angel, Brandon Lee in The Crow, Aidan Turner of Being Human, Michael McManus in Lexx, Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, everybody in Twilight, and Johnny Depp in From Hell, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, and, effectively, just about each position exterior Jack Sparrow.
