Tens of 1000’s of Southern California residents have been under evacuation orders on Friday as authorities tried to stop the explosion of a 7,000-gallon storage tank that started venting a hazardous chemical into the air.

The tank of methyl methacrylate, which is used to make plastic elements, overheated on Thursday and started leaking dangerous vapors at an aerospace plastics facility in Garden Grove, positioned in Orange County. Fire officers said the tank might fall and break, releasing the chemical into the ground, or it might explode.

“This thing is going to fail, and we don’t know when,” Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey said Friday. “We’re doing our best to figure out when or how we can prevent it.”

Officials ordered 40,000 residents in Garden Grove to depart and expanded evacuation orders Friday to some residents of 5 other Orange County cities after being unable to stop the leak in a single day on the tank at GKN Aerospace, which makes elements for industrial and army plane.

Authorities haven’t reported accidents or deaths, according to The Associated Press.

“There are literally two options left remaining,” Covey said at a news convention Friday. “The tank fails and spills a total of about [6,000] to 7,000 gallons of very bad chemicals into the parking lot in that area. Or, two, the tank goes into a thermal runaway and blows up, affecting the tanks around them that have fuel or chemicals in them as well.

“People need to get out of their houses and get into a safe space,” he added.

Covey said that if the chemical does leak out of the tank and onto the ground, groups can enterprise into the realm with hazardous materials fits and “neutralize and mitigate the vapors that will be coming off of that.”

But if the container explodes, the blast would really feel one thing like “if you ever seen videos of tank cars on a railroad track blowing up, and that fireball it puts out, and it blows half the tank car half a mile down the train track, that’s the incident potential we are dealing with if this suffers a catastrophic failure,” Covey said.

Covey said fire officials have set up sandbags and taken other measures to contain a potential spillage. Authorities have been able to maintain the tank’s temperature, buying them time to figure out how to fix it, he said in a later update.

Garden Grove is about 38 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and less than a mile from Disneyland’s two theme parks, which were not under evacuation orders Friday. The city is known for its vibrant Vietnamese community, one of the largest of any U.S. city.

Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, said if the chemical heats up, it can release a vapor that is harmful to people’s health. It can cause respiratory issues, itching and burning eyes, nausea and headaches.

Crews were initially successful and were able to neutralize one of two damaged tanks, but Covey said they determined Friday morning that the remaining tank was “in the biggest crisis.”

GKN Aerospace said specialized hazardous material teams are assessing the situation.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s workplace said in a social media post Friday that he had been briefed on the scenario and that a number of state companies have been working in tandem with local officers since Thursday night time.
