Tip Toe makes its long-awaited debut on Sunday, May 31, delving into the worlds of electrician Clive (David Morrissey) and his neighbour, Canal Street bar proprietor Leo (performed by Alan Cumming).

Having lived side-by-side in relative concord for 15 years, Clive and Leo swiftly grow to be bitter enemies after the previous’s deep-rooted prejudices are introduced to the floor.

The Channel 4 five-part thriller will consist of 5 hour-long episodes, rolling out over the approaching weeks. While Tip Toe just isn’t based on a true story, it attracts inspiration from creator Russell T. Davies and his buddies’ personal experiences.

Actor David Morrissey, 61, is widely regarded as one of Britain’s most versatile performers, whose in depth TV, movie and stage credit embody the ruthless and menacing Governor in The Walking Dead, The Long Shadow, Gordon Brown in The Deal, and a devoted detective in James Graham’s Sherwood.

Away from the screen, David has spoken candidly about his “terrible” social anxiety, which he has revealed contributed to him turning into an alcoholic, studies the Liverpool Echo.

“I am a recovering alcoholic,” David, who has remained sober for 21 years, told Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. “Drinking first was about anxiety. I’ve had this terrible social anxiety and that helped me get through it.”

He revealed that his consuming started during his teenage years following his father’s death, and “in my adult life, I couldn’t stop. I wasn’t drinking to be convivial. I was on my own in the pub. That was really hard and very hard for my ex-wife and people around me.”

The actor also disclosed the pivotal second that reworked his life, studies to The Guardian. After clutching onto the phone quantity of a former colleague linked to liquorics Anonymous for two years, David ultimately made the call when he reached his lowest level.

“I was in a terrible, terrible state,” he said. “He came round my house and just sat with me. And I’ve not drank since that day.”

Prior to attaining stardom, the 61-year-old actor encountered his ex-wife, acclaimed British novelist Esther Freud, at drama college in 1993. They had been together for more than a decade before marrying in 2006.

Esther is the daughter of famend painter Lucian Freud and the creator behind Hideous Kinky, My Sister and Other Lovers, Mac and Me, and I Couldn’t Love You More.

The couple wed in 2006 during an intimate ceremony on Southwold Pier, and went on to have three youngsters together: Albie, Anna, and Gene. In 2020, the pair separated amicably after 14 years of marriage and 27 years together.

After their separation, Esther, 63, found love once more and marked her milestone birthday by embarking on a global journey with her new accomplice.

She told Hello!: “It was fun to turn 60. Me and my boyfriend – I love using that word – went travelling for four months to Australia, Singapore and Laos. I came back just before my 60th birthday and had a wonderful party. It felt really good.”

Discussing her separation from David, Esther added: “There wasn’t a huge amount of animosity or grievance really left. I felt it was more that our communication had gone awry.

“I did not know what he wished. I bear in mind at some point considering, ‘I do not even know what food you want. I do not even know something anymore. I’ve misplaced my hyperlink with this individual who was such as you’.”

Following the divorce, Sherwood star David has been romantically linked to theatrical agent Larah Simpson, with the pair first spotted together in December 2023.

Despite embarking on a new relationship, Morrissey revealed to The Times that he and his ex-wife Esther remain on good terms: “We’re all very close.”

“You know, my ex-wife and I are very close … we all see each other a lot.”
