Today hosts poke fun at dumb Pantone Color of | TV Shows

The Today hosts are divided on their ideas of Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year.

During the Thursday, December 4, phase of the NBC morning news show, Sheinelle Jones revealed that the Color Institute has declared Cloud Dancer as the official colour of the upcoming yr. As pictures of the shade appeared on screen and she started to announce, “The 2026 Color of the Year is Pantone 11-4201, also known as….,” the host was interrupted by Al Roker and Craig Melvin, who completed her sentence, saying, “white.”

As her co-hosts burst into laughter, Jones argued, “No! Cloud- no, listen, it’s called Cloud Dancer.”

“Lily White,” Carson Daly chimed in.

“Maybe ecru?” Melvin added as he continued to snicker.

Jones tried to make clear, “Now, okay. Let me explain-. Wait a minute!

“Before you judge, let me explain Cloud Dancer,” she continued. “The Color Authority described it as “a billowy, balanced white imbued with a feeling of serenity. Yeah? Yeah?”

The “ethereal” hue is a symbol of a “calming affect in a frenetic society.” Pantone told Today that it is akin to a blank canvas, signifying a desire to begin anew.

“Otherwise known as white,” Roker joked.

Jones echoed, “No! Saying, ‘This shade serves as a symbol of calming influence.”

Savannah Guthrie then gave her take, “It’s white.”

Jones then rationalized “the special color,” saying, “If you look closely, it’s different!”

“It’s white!” Daly said.

Melvin sarcastically stated, “They’ve run out of colors.”

Jones said the color will be everywhere, from the new Motorola cell phone and Play-Doh, before continuing to defend the shade.

“It’s like, you know, all the different variances when you’re painting a wall white. There’s cloudy, there’s eggshell. There you go,” she concluded.

Although her ultimate clarification received over Guthrie, the remaining hosts and followers have been still aligned.

Another questioned, “WHYYYYY is this the color of the year?!?!?!?”

“How boring,” a third said, while another person chimed in, “Dumbest color of the year ever.”

Pantone Color Institute’s vice president rationalized the white hue “exemplifies our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection, a liminal space that is a launchpad for creative expression.”

This is the twenty seventh time Pantone has chosen a Color of the Year. The program was initially launched as a one-off instructional initiative to mark the new millennium in 2000; however, due to its recognition, it turned an annual event.

For 2025, Pantone selected Mocha Moose, which is a “warming, brown hue imbued with richness.”

The company explained, “It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.”
