The Today Show has applied stricter security measures for its on-air company following a current incident in which an intruder entered the studio and confronted co-anchor Craig Melvin while shouting a racist slur.

The current security breach, which occurred last Thursday morning, allegedly rattled Today crew members, who are still recovering from the kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie.

Just hours after the intruder managed to bypass security at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and confronted the Today anchor with a racial slur, the 47-year-old took to Instagram to reassure involved followers that he was unhurt. “Hey, everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours.

“I’m doing just high-quality,” he wrote. “Thanks for reaching out. I’m wanting ahead to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.”

According to Page Six, the incident unfolded in a stairway near Studio 1A, where a backpack-wearing man, having somehow slipped past NBC security, charged at Melvin and hurled a racial slur at him.

Sources told the New York Post that the man had been demanding to meet Al Roker and had directed the N-word at Melvin.

Security responded immediately, detaining and arresting the individual.

Remarkably, viewers at home would have had no idea anything had happened, as Melvin and Roker took to the air shortly afterward without making any mention of the alarming episode.

Police confirmed they have an individual in custody following the incident.

“On Thursday, July 16, 2026, at roughly 0857 hours, a uniformed officer assigned to 30 Rockefeller Center was alerted to a disorderly particular person inside the building,” the NYPD stated.

“Immediately thereafter, the responding officer entered the building and positioned the person in custody without incident. There have been no accidents reported, and the investigation stays energetic and ongoing.”

The show subsequently released its own statement Thursday afternoon.

“An particular person entered an unauthorized space in a vestibule close to Studio 1A,” the statement read. “The particular person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security.”

The man “was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without additional incident,” the statement continued, noting that “there was no altercation” or injuries. “TODAY is cooperating absolutely with law enforcement as they examine the matter.”
