Trump announced that there could be a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, taking credit for the transfer.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine. The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II.”

As identified by the president, the short-term ceasefire will stretch across Russia’s Victory Day – a vacation that commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in 1945.

For years, since Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2022, the 2 sides have been relentlessly pummeling each other with strikes that had displaced thousands and thousands of people. Past ceasefire agreements have been largely unsuccessful, with Moscow and Kyiv both accusing each other of violating ceasefires that they’ve individually declared.

Trump’s triumphant announcement about Russia and Ukraine comes after the U.S. was accused of violating its own ceasefire settlement with Iran on Thursday.

The U.S. and Iran reportedly exchanged fire close to the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said in a Truth Social post that the U.S. fired on Iranian ships after they launched an “unprovoked attack” on three U.S. navy ships that had been transiting through the important port.

Trump told reporters that despite the exchange of fire, the ceasefire still stands. However, Iran accused the U.S. of breaking the ceasefire settlement, condemning “the aggressive action by the terrorist U.S. military.”
