Assassination attempt-survivor U.S. President Donald Trump recommended that shooters have focused him because he’s a “very consequential” chief, while expressing concern for his life a number of instances during a speech Monday.

The president made the daring remarks during a speech alongside the mother and father of victims of crimes dedicated by undocumented immigrants on Monday where he declared Feb. 22 can be designated “Angel Family Day.” The day is supposed to honor U.S. residents killed by undocumented immigrants, a central issue of his 2024 presidential marketing campaign and second presidency, The New York Post reported forward of Trump’s speech. Trump has been focused in a number of thwarted assassination makes an attempt, one of which he only narrowly survived after he was gunned down at a 2024 Pennsylvania rally.

“You read about all these crazy shooters, but they only go after consequential presidents. They don’t go after non-consequential presidents, you know?”, Trump said Monday. “If you take a look—Abraham Lincoln, some big, some big one. John Kennedy, in a certain way, was very consequential. He represented something very important.

“I used to be told that—I noticed that the other day—they are saying they only go after consequential. So perhaps I need to be a little bit less consequential,” he said, going on to joke to Border Czar Tom Homan, “Can we maintain it back a little bit, please, Tom? Can we just, like, good and simple. Let’s be a regular president for a little while.”

Trump later added, “I do not know how long I’ll be around. Got a lot of people gunning for me, do not I?”.

The speech came a day before the president’s highly-anticipated State of the Union address, where he will speak about his administration’s efforts to tackle immigration and illegal border crossings, among other topics.

Among those honored was Laken Riley, who was killed by an undocumented immigrant, and 62 other people killed and two who survived such attacks. Riley, a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student, was killed while jogging by Venezuelan national Jose Ibarra on Feb. 22, 2024, marking the significance of the new holiday honoring “angel households.” Ibarra was convicted for Riley’s murder in January.

It comes after the president signed the Laken Riley Act, which stipulates that all non-citizens arrested and charged with certain crimes be held in federal detention without bond, into law at the beginning of his second term.

A White House official described the vigil that occurred on Monday as a “solemn ceremony that reminds us all of why deportations of the worst of the worst must continue.”

Among the White House officials present at the event were top immigration officials such as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Homan, alongside “angel family” members.

“President Trump is proud to have delivered accountability for Angel Families by ushering in the most secure border in history, deporting the criminal illegal aliens let into our country by prior Administrations, and upholding the rule of law by strongly enforcing our immigration laws,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a assertion to The Post.

“The first bill President Trump signed into law was the Laken Riley Act to prevent these senseless tragedies from happening again and to keep innocent American citizens safe. The President and our nation will join Angel Families in honoring the memory of these amazing men and women.”

The president also honored other outstanding victims, including Katie Abraham, Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton, alongside their bereaved members of the family at the event.

Katie Abraham, 20, was killed in a drunk driving accident in Illinois by a Guatemalan man in 2025; Morin, 24, was killed while mountaineering in Maryland in 2023 by an Salvadoran man; and Hamilton, 19, was raped and murdered by a Salvadorian teen in Maryland in 2022.
