Trump hopes to make a deal with Iran after | Political News
U.S President Donald Trump said he hopes to “make a deal” with Iran after escalating tensions in the Middle East in current weeks.
“We have the biggest most powerful ships in the world over there… hopefully we will make a deal. If we don’t make a deal, we will find out whether or not he was right,” Trump told reporters exterior Mar-a-Lago.
The president’s response comes after Iran’s supreme chief threatened that an assault on Iran by the U.S would lead to a “regional war” in the Middle East.
The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said this while talking to a crowd at his compound in Tehran. He was quoted by the nation’s Tasnim news company.
His feedback come after Trump’s threats of attainable army response to the Iranian authorities’s crackdown on nationwide protests that began in December.
Khamenei also said the U.S focus is definitely on Iran’s sources, such as oil, natural fuel and other sources. Americans needed to “seize this country, just as they controlled it before,” he said.
The United States’ nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, along with three warships, was found located in the Arabian Sea in late January, the New York Times reported. The warships have Tomahawk missiles, known for its deep land attack capabilities.
Trump has not yet ordered a strike but has routinely demanded that Tehran stop its nuclear program and stop the killing of protesters.
In a policy brief from Jan. 27, Ellie Geranmayeh, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump is “unlikely to come out a winner” as tensions escalate between the U.S and Iran.
“While Iran will take the biggest hit from such a regional conflict, Trump is unlikely to come out a winner with the type of ‘decisive’ blow he seeks,” Geranmayeh wrote. “Those pushing for US strikes argue that they can protect civilians and also tip the balance of hard power in favour of actors seeking to topple the Islamic Republic on the ground,” she continued.
“Yet the past two decades of US intervention in similar contexts suggests this will lead to more bloodshed and instability, while also hollowing out the economy and sidelining moderate forces pushing for democratic change,” she added.
The Trump administration has informed Iran it’s open to meeting and negotiating a deal, a senior U.S. official told Axios.
The rising tension between U.S and Iran has also impacted peace talks between Ukraine and Russia which had been scheduled to occur on Sunday.
“The date or the location may change,” Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. “From our point of view, something is happening in the situation between the United States and Iran, and those developments could affect the timing.” Senior Ukrainian and Russian officers had been supposed to meet in Abu Dhabi on Sunday but it has since been delayed.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it should also assault Tehran if the nation assaults Israel.
