The director of a important counterterrorism company has stepped down amid the battle with Iran, dealing a vital setback to Donald Trump. In his resignation announcement on X, Joe Kent, who had associations with far-right teams prior to his Trump appointment, acknowledged: “After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today.
“I can’t in good conscience help the continuing struggle in Iran. Iran posed no imminent menace to our nation, and it’s clear that we began this struggle due to strain from Israel and its highly effective American foyer.” Kent, a former political candidate with hyperlinks to right-wing activists, was confirmed to his place last July in a 52-44 vote, experiences the Mirror US.

Prior to joining President Donald Trump‘s administration, Kent mounted two unsuccessful congressional campaigns in Washington state. He also had a military career, completing 11 deployments as a Green Beret, before transitioning to work at the CIA.
Democrats vigorously opposed Kent’s confirmation, citing his previous connections to far-right individuals and conspiracy theories. During his 2022 congressional campaign, Kent compensated Graham Jorgensen, a member of the far-right military organization the Proud Boys, for consulting services.
He also maintained close ties with Joey Gibson, founder of the Christian nationalist organization Patriot Prayer, and garnered backing from various far-right personalities.
In his resignation letter, Kent stated: “Early in this administration, high-ranking Israeli officers and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation marketing campaign that wholly undermined your America First platform and sowed pro-war sentiments to encourage a struggle with Iran.
“This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that should you strike now, there was a clear path to a swift victory. This was a lie and is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands of our best men and women. We cannot make this mistake again.”
