Trump lowers expectations for Friday jobs report

While assembly with tech industry leaders Thursday evening, President Donald Trump appeared to decrease expectations for Friday’s jobs report, which would be the first since he fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer.

“Well we’re going to have to see what the numbers, I don’t know, they come out tomorrow. But the real numbers that I’m talking about are going to be whatever it is. But it will be a year from now,” Trump told reporters.

Friday’s jobs report would be the first since Trump fired McEntarfer, after August’s jobs report confirmed U.S. employers added just 73,000 jobs in July, properly short of the 115,000 anticipated. Worse, revisions shaved a gorgeous 258,000 jobs off May and June payrolls. And the unemployment charge ticked larger to 4.2% as Americans dropped out of the labor power and the ranks of the unemployed rose by 221,000.

In a post on his social media platform asserting the firing, Trump alleged that the figures had been manipulated for political causes and said that McEntarfer, who former President Joe Biden appointed, must be fired. He supplied no evidence for the charge.

“This rationale for firing Dr. McEntarfer is without merit and undermines the credibility of federal economic statistics that are a cornerstone of intelligent economic decision-making by businesses, families, and policymakers,” the assertion from the group, the Friends of BLS, said.

After Trump’s initial post, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said on X that McEntarfer was no longer main the bureau and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would serve as the performing director.

“I support the President’s decision to replace Biden’s Commissioner and ensure the American People can trust the important and influential data coming from BLS,” Chavez-DeRemer said.

Friday’s jobs report confirmed that just 73,000 jobs had been added last month and that 258,000 fewer jobs had been created in May and June than beforehand estimated.
