Trump says Iran peace talks too soon despite | Political News
President Donald Trump said it is “too soon” to start vis-à-vis peace talks with Iran despite Pakistani claims that a deal is close to being agreed to.
Speaking to the New York Post on Wednesday, the president said peace talks at the current stage are “too much,” stating that he would not suppose they will occur soon.
He told the publication that sending a reporter to Pakistan for the talks would not be a sensible transfer and that talks are “too far” out.
The admission comes after Trump threatened to bomb Iran “at a much higher level and intensity” than before if a deal is not agreed upon to open the Strait of Hormuz.
“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran,” Trump wrote.
“If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he added.
The Iran conflict has been raging for 67 days now, and until Trump’s Wednesday morning admission, it appeared to be winding down at last after Pakistan said earlier in the week that a deal was properly within attain.
Trump beforehand said he could be open to touring to Pakistan to signal a formal settlement — a transfer he said would come out of respect for the efforts of Pakistani protection chief Asim Munar to convey the U.S. and Iran together for direct negotiations.
Just last week, Iran’s overseas minister briefly visited Islamabad again on Sunday as Pakistan’s political and navy management scrambled to reignite ceasefire negotiations between Tehran and Washington, but U.S. President Donald Trump said they might speak by cellphone instead.
Abbas Araghchi had left Pakistan’s capital late the day past, creating confusion around an anticipated second spherical of talks there, but he returned before persevering with on to Moscow on Sunday, Iranian state media said. He had been in Oman, which beforehand mediated talks and is on the other facet of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The White House last week said it will dispatch envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad to observe up on historic face-to-face talks earlier this month. But shortly after Araghchi’s departure Saturday, Trump said he had called off the mission because of a lack of progress with Iran.
“If they want, we can talk but we’re not sending people,” Trump told Fox News on last Sunday. He said earlier on social media: “All they have to do is call!!!”
