President Donald Trump said the U.S. has taken custody of an Iranian cargo ship days after the Islamic Republic announced it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again due to Washington’s blockade of the passage.
Despite determined efforts by mediators to lengthen the ceasefire that is set to expire on Wednesday, Iran reaffirmed its intention to stop ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, offered the US blockade of Iranian ports persists. That stalemate reportedly led the U.S. to take control of the Tehranian vessel.
“Today, an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named TOUSKA, nearly 900 feet long and weighing almost as much as an aircraft carrier, tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for them. The U.S. Navy Guided Missile Destroyer USS SPRUANCE intercepted the TOUSKA in the Gulf of Oman, and gave them fair warning to stop,” he wrote on his Truth Social account on Sunday.
“The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom. Right now, U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel. The TOUSKA is under U.S. Treasury Sanctions because of their prior history of illegal activity. We have full custody of the ship, and are seeing what’s on board! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The conflicting blockades have difficult efforts at mediation spearheaded by Pakistan and raised questions about whether or not the two-week ceasefire may be prolonged. Moreover, Trump’s outburst at Iran for violating the truce by firing pictures in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday despatched tensions skyrocketing on Sunday.
