Trump slams dictator claims as National Guard | Political News

U.S. President Donald Trump denied accusations that he’s a “dictator” after he deployed National Guard troops to the nation’s capital in a bid to decrease crime.

His initial announcement on Monday led to fierce backlash, prompting tons of to flood the streets of Washington, D.C., to protest the transfer, holding indicators that read “Hands off DC.”

“Already they’re saying, ‘He’s a dictator!’ The place is going to hell and we got to stop it,” Trump said at an event Wednesday at The Kennedy Center.

“So instead of saying ‘He’s a dictator,’ they should say ‘We’re going to join him in making Washington safe,'” Trump added. “They say ‘He’s a dictator!’ and then they end up getting mugged.”

The National Guard started its deployment to the nation’s capital yesterday and estimates that 800 troops shall be stationed by the end of the week.

The federal takeover of D.C.’s police drive is presently supposed to last for 30 days, but Trump made clear Wednesday that he plans on asking Congress for a “long-term extension.”

At first, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser spoke out against Trump’s transfer, calling on the group “to jump in” to “protect our city, autonomy and home rule” by voting in Democrats to the House during the midterm elections to stop Trump’s “authoritarian push.”

However, she later made clear that she’s going to cooperate after admitting that her energy to resist is restricted by the law, which grants the federal authorities more control over the capital metropolis than U.S. states.

She also clarified that the police chief remained in command of the division and its officers.
