The long-awaited showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua may face extra delays, according to Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn. A battle between the 2 British heavyweights has been mooted for many years but has never come to fruition. A deal to host the battle in Saudi Arabia was close to being agreed in 2021, but talks in the end fell through.

However, it appears the battle may finally happen later this 12 months following Fury’s triumph over Arslanbek Makhmudov last weekend. He called out Joshua, who was in the group, in the aftermath of his unanimous factors victory. Joshua didn’t immediately commit to the Fury battle but later urged that it’s probably to occur sooner fairly than later.

Reports have urged that Fury has already signed to face his British rival, but Joshua’s promoter Hearn has urged that his shopper may take a warm-up battle before placing pen to paper.

It comes just months after Joshua was concerned in a critical car accident in Nigeria, ensuing in the tragic deaths of his close pals Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

“I don’t know if Fury has signed or not, that is his business,” said Hearn. “If he has then that is great. We received the contract last week, we are going through that.

“Obviously there was a lot taking place in AJ’s life and we wish to make sure that he’s prepared to return to the ring. He is about to get the all-clear in phrases of the bodily aspect to return to full training and that is great news.

“We expect to see him back in the ring in July. The original plan was to fight in March, then to fight Tyson Fury in August.

“Given every thing that has occurred, that has been delayed. July and November are the 2 dates that have been introduced to us now and we anticipate to transfer ahead.”

There has been speculation that Joshua could face Deontay Wilder, who outpointed Derek Chisora earlier this month, in any potential tune-up fight.

“I feel it is rather probably [he will have a warm-up fight],” added Hearn. “Given what occurred, we have been supposed to be doing that anyway.

“Fury has just had his tune-up fight with 12 really vital rounds to get him sharp for the next one and I expect us to do the same. Wilder would be a separate deal.

“We have made it clear we’re keen to battle Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury back-to-back. I’m not being disrespectful that Wilder is a warm-up battle but AJ may be very comfy to go into that battle next.

“That is not the basis of the deal we have been offered but it is one we would be very interested in if it were offered and we want to look at that route.

“Some may understand that to be the more harmful option, particularly when there may be so a lot using on Fury against Joshua, Netflix, all people.

“I think they will probably be looking for a slightly easier option for Joshua like Fury had, with all due respect, and then move straight into that fight. 100 per cent. [A warm-up fight in July then Fury in November] is the plan.”
