On Sunday, the Rhode Island neighborhood held a vigil to honor the 2 Brown University college students who had been murdered in cold blood Saturday afternoon. 

Bundled against the cold and snow and holding candles, the gang got here together in Lippitt Park to maintain a vigil for two college students killed and 9 others injured in a taking pictures at Brown University 24 hours earlier.

The vigil was a fruits of a day of mourning on campus and in a metropolis that only had two other homicides this 12 months before Saturday’s taking pictures.

Holding up a candle and explaining that it was the first night time of Hannukah, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that he hope it’d symbolize the “first little flicker for our community to get together and heal.”

Sarah Mack, a rabbi at a neighborhood synagogue, said the taking pictures left the neighborhood with, “a sense of safety shattered.”

‘Person of Interest’ Detained in Brown Shooting; Attack Occurred in Classroom of Judaic Studies Professor

While 9 other college students had been injured, the 2 who misplaced their lives have been recognized: Nineteen-year-old Ella Cook of Mountain Brook, AL, and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov of Midlothian, VA. Cook’s id was leaked first, confirmed through remarks by the Rev. Craig Smalley at Cathedral Church of the Advent, Cook’s household church in Birmingham. 

Her death was confirmed during a Sunday morning service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, where church leaders told congregants that Cook was among those killed in the taking pictures.

In remarks shared during the service, church officers remembered Cook as “an incredibly grounded, faithful, bright light,” noting her longtime involvement at the church and her impression on those around her.

“She was an incredible light, not only here growing up at the Advent in the myriad ways in which she served faithfully and encouraged those around her,” the church said, “but at Brown University as well.”

Cook was the vice president of the Brown Republican Club. Like its Ivy League counterparts, Brown is a breeding ground of leftism, so for a younger lady to be prepared to take on such a management function under this excessive stress is uncommon. In 2024, the pro-Hamas/Palestine protests that erupted on the Brown campus had been fueled by a campus group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). Brown suspended the group, but in October, eliminated the suspension and reinstated it. So, this was the environment Cook selected to take on in order to encourage fellow conservatives to stand up and be counted. Because of the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, as effectively as her conservative leanings, there have been outpourings of condolences from Republicans in Alabama’s state and federal authorities, including Vice President JD Vance.

The second sufferer was recognized on Monday. Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov was an aspiring neurosurgeon, and had just graduated from Midlothian High School in Virginia and selected Brown because of its beneficiant scholarship choices. 

He was described as “gentle” and “extroverted” who labored at Wawa over the summer season to buy a new laptop computer forward of the college 12 months, his siblings Rukhsora Umurzokova, 22, and Samara Umurzokova, 15, told the outlet. 

The Umurzokov household immigrated from Uzbekistan in 2011 and grew to become naturalized residents soon after.
