The renewed ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah seems to have already damaged as Israeli fire continues to rain down on southern Lebanon, main the U.S. and Iran to cancel peace talks Friday.
The senior U.S. official also told Axios that “Netanyahu agreed 100% to renew the ceasefire in Lebanon.” However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s workplace has not issued affirmation yet as studies emerge about the deal.
Israel’s army said it struck more than 150 Hezbollah targets in southern and japanese Lebanon in a single day, in what Hezbollah described as “intense fighting,” killing at least 21 Lebanese and 4 Israeli troopers.
Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee said that the IDF will continue to combat off threats from Hezbollah after accusing the Lebanese paramilitary group of violating the ceasefire, though it stays unclear which ceasefire he was referring to.
“[The IDF will] enjoy full operational freedom to remove threats in every area where the Chief of the General Staff has instructed the provision of all capabilities to the military forces in the field,” he said.
Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin confirmed the IDF had not been given different instructions from the government and that Israeli forces are and will continue operating in a “forward defense zone,” The Associated Press studies.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned Israel’s “continued conflict-making” following its latest strikes on Lebanon, warning that it could face “serious and immediate consequences.”
Officials confirmed that talks in Switzerland between the U.S. and Iran were called off Friday as a result of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, sparking concern about the initial deal holding.
It comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced Israeli national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, after the far-right figure made calls to “burn” Lebanon after an intense night of fighting that killed four IDF soldiers.
“This is not a rant by a random genocidal lunatic. It’s a public post by the national security minister of the Israeli regime,” Araghchi wrote on X. “The genocidal death cult headquartered in Tel Aviv is a risk to all of humanity. It threatens all people. Its only curiosity is everlasting conflict.”
