As President Donald Trump’s administration reportedly sends 1000’s of U.S. Marines to the Middle East and delivers oscillating claims about its targets in Iran, some consultants say an American ground drive deployment could show even more tough and costly than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq mixed.

Despite claims by Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in current days about the alleged crushing success of their “very complete” wartime assaults with Israel against Iran, the president deployed a reinforcement unit of around 5,000 sailors and Marines to the Middle East, according to The Wall Street Journal.

It got here after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said just days earlier that boots on the ground have been “not part of the plan right now.”

Experts have said the U.S. was probably to have bombed an all-girls’ elementary college in Iran on the first day of the battle, killing more than 150 college students, and Iran’s efficient closure of the Strait of Hormuz has jeopardized the world’s oil provide. At least seven U.S. troopers have died due to the battle thus far, and the Trump administration reportedly spent at least $11.3 billion during its first six days of battle.

Still, top Trump administration members have condemned major U.S. media retailers for their crucial coverage of the battle, threatening to revoke the licenses of firms that broadcast what they take into account unflattering or unpatriotic tales. Neither the U.S. navy or Pentagon had commented publicly on the reported motion of reinforcement troops as of Saturday night.

Officials have said the reinforcements are coming from an amphibious-ready Marine unit led by the Japan-based USS Tripoli, an assault ship.

But as the prospect of U.S. troops on the ground in the Middle East seems to inch nearer to actuality, some consultants have said the strategy mandatory for an efficient ground operation in Iran is just too superior even for the most well-funded navy on Earth.

Writing in the Turkish newspaper The Daily Sabah, analyst Çağatay Balcı said, “A comprehensive ground intervention could prove even more strategically costly than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined.”

Iran is one of the biggest and most populous nations in the world, occupying 630,000 sq. miles of land and home to more than 93 million residents.

The nation’s land mass is bigger than that of Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands mixed, and thanks to its diverse and tough terrain, it’s notoriously difficult to invade via the ground.

Iran’s terrain consists of salt flats, dense marshes and mountain ranges that create natural fortress-like limitations around large components of the nation. It also controls the Strait of Hormuz, the only waterway between the Persian Gulf and the open ocean through which 20% of the world’s oil provide passes.

The battle in Iran has ground tanker site visitors through the Strait of Hormuz to a halt, and oil costs have been swinging sharply. The Islamic Republic vowed to block the area’s oil exports, saying it might not enable “even a single liter” to be shipped to its enemies. Trump also said in social media posts last week that there have been no reviews of Iran planting mines in the strait.

Any disruption to site visitors through the Strait of Hormuz impacts the oil commerce, and a number of ships in and around it have come under assault from Iran during the battle. Fears about the strait induced oil to spike on Monday, only for it to swiftly fall back after Trump prompt the battle could be close to an end.

“The scale of what is at stake cannot be overstated,” Hakan Kaya, senior portfolio supervisor at investment management firm Neuberger Berman, told The Associated Press.

He said oil firms could soak up a partial slowdown lasting a week or two. But a full or close to full closure lasting a month or more would push crude oil costs “well into triple digits” and European natural gasoline costs “toward or above the crisis levels seen in 2022.”
