It has been 22 years since You Got Served hit U.S. theaters on January 30, 2004, and in some way, the film’s dance battles still live rent-free in the recollections of an whole technology. Long before viral dance challenges and TikTookay choreography, You Got Served turned the underground dance scene into a full-blown cinematic event. With a younger, star-studded solid, jaw-dropping choreography, and enough dramatic dance battles to keep viewers on the sting of their seats, the movie grew to become a lot more than just another early-2000s dance film. What was You Got Served about?
Directed by Chris Stokes, the 2004 drama follows best mates David and Elgin, performed by Omarion and Marques Houston, who lead a gifted road dance crew in Los Angeles. Their big dream? To open their own dance and recording studio.
Of course, issues don’t precisely go according to plan.
In true film fashion, the pair need money to make their dream a actuality, so they enter an underground dance competitors where critical money — and critical bragging rights — are on the road. But when betrayal, rivalry and a devastating loss threaten to tear the crew aside, David and Elgin discover themselves on reverse sides of a friendship that once appeared unbreakable.
Eventually, the dancers put their variations apart, create a new type and reunite for one last shot at proving they’re the best on the streets.
And audiences completely ate it up.
The film grew to become a cultural phenomenon, significantly among younger followers who didn’t just watch the dance battles — they needed to recreate them. Omarion mirrored on the film’s affect in a 2014 interview with Billboard, recalling just how far the phenomenon had unfold:
“I remember, in the first week that it came out, we got reports that people were actually battling in the theaters,” he recalled. “It became more than just a movie — it became a part of culture. And that’s like… you can’t ask for anything more. People always ask me if I’m going to do another dance movie, and it’s hard to say if I would ever do another dance movie, because, really, that was like the top of the top for me.”

At the 2004 American Choreography Awards, You Got Served received for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography – Feature Film. The award was shared by choreographers Dave Scott, Shane Sparks and Robert Hoffman, who also performed rival dancer Max.
The movie also picked up notable nominations at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards, including Best Dance Sequence for Omarion and Marques Houston and Breakout Male Performance for Omarion.
