The Ryder Cup is constructed on depth, delight, and razor-thin margins — and at Bethpage Black, that unstable combine boiled over when Bryson DeChambeau clashed with Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood during Saturday’s fourballs.

The United States entered the second day reeling after Europe’s commanding start, although DeChambeau called it “luck” after Day 1. Tensions then spilled onto the fifteenth inexperienced in entrance of a raucous New York crowd. DeChambeau and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had been paired against the skilled duo of Rose and Fleetwood, who had been tasked with extending Europe’s stranglehold.

It was a fiercely contested match, with the Europeans successful 3&2, but issues turned ugly after Rose ready to putt on the fifteenth with his workforce holding a three-hole benefit. Rose, who was on the improper end of a slip-up by Keegan Bradley, later explained that he had waited for the Americans to end their read but felt they stepped back into his eyeline.

“I was waiting to putt, the boys were working on their read, going through their calculations. I waited a few seconds and I felt like they came up again. I questioned, ‘It’s my putt, right?'” Rose told Sky Sports.

“Maybe I didn’t say it as politely as I could have said it in the moment, but by no means was there any disrespect. Obviously it was taken the wrong way.”

Rose had requested DeChambeau’s caddie, Gregory Bodine, to transfer out of his eyeline when studying the inexperienced. That was enough to spark heated phrases.

After the putt, DeChambeau confronted Rose, while Fleetwood exchanged barbs with the American star. Meanwhile, caddie tensions heightened the scene: Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, stepped in and later appeared to put his fingers on European vice-captain Francesco Molinari.

Fleetwood’s caddie, Ian Finnis, tried to ease the scenario. “Let’s just all chill out. Let’s play. He can take as long as he wants,” he was overheard telling Bodine.

“It was a shame the match got to that point, it was a really great match,” Rose said. “I don’t think we should dwell on that. I said to the boys if you want me to say ‘excuse me please,’ then yeah, my bad. But it was an amazing match.”

He added: “I spoke to the boys, it should be [put to bed]. There was no intent behind it whatsoever. I think especially Scottie, I admire him more than anyone else on tour the way he goes about his business, the way he goes about his life. Just huge respect all around from my point of view, it’s something that has been taken in a way it wasn’t intended.

“It was a big putt, a big second, I’m attempting to control my setting as effectively in that situation. We’re all opponents proper. I feel that’s all within the framework of what we have got to do out right here.”

Fleetwood echoed the sentiment: “It’s one second out of two days of a lot of golf and a lot of great golf. It occurs, I don’t assume it’s that big of a deal.”
