Why the Lone Star State Is Winning the Great

I’ve been writing and speaking about what I call the Great Sorting for some time now. This is pulling the nation into two opposing camps: Business-friendly, affluent, free, conservative, and business-hostile, floundering, restricted, and “progressive,” or more and more (I’m trying at you, New York City) outright communist. This has financial and political implications, and it is largely the latter driving the former.

It’s affecting crimson states and blue states. On Saturday, I wrote about how California is dropping the Great Sorting, and badly. That failure could also be laid squarely at the toes of their political management.

Now, this is the other aspect of that coin: Texas, which is turning into the land of boom-towns.

The race to grow to be America’s next financial heavyweight might already have a frontrunner.

The latest Internal Revenue Service (IRS) migration data show billions of {dollars} in taxpayer wealth flowing into Texas, while Census figures show the state’s largest metropolitan areas continue to outpace a lot of the nation in population growth, strengthening a decades-long shift in America’s financial middle of gravity.

What’s more, Texas is not relying on a single boomtown. Dallas-Fort Worth added more residents than any metropolitan space in the nation over the past yr, while Houston, Austin and San Antonio also ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing metros.

That uncommon breadth offers Texas a number of engines of financial growth, offering companies with bigger labor swimming pools, diversified industries and a broader buyer base than states anchored by a single dominant metropolis.

There’s a key time period in there: Economic middle of gravity. Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio are changing Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and their blue-state brethren in being that middle of gravity, and that’s only going to continue. There’s a lesson in that for anybody paying consideration.

“Capital follows where there is confidence,” Texas Association of Business Chief Policy Officer Gabriela von zur Muehlen beforehand told Fox News Digital. “And right now there is a tremendous amount of confidence in Texas.”

Von zur Muehlen said Texas’ tax construction and predictable regulatory atmosphere continue to appeal to companies and investment from other states, serving to reinforce the state’s financial momentum.

It’s not often one can truthfully say, “…and it was as simple as that.”

Red States Crush Blue States: Incomes Now Up 40 Percent Faster Since 2000

The idea is simple, that is. Lower taxes. Lower, smart rules. Reward success, not failure. The utility is a little more tough, and the query is, can the blue cities reverse course now, at this late stage? Texas and Florida have already stolen a long march on the blue states. The Great Sorting sure appears to be accelerating. Sooner or later, issues are going to have to change. 

That, of course, is up to the voters. There are still conservative voters in California; some of them are my buddies and colleagues. It’s the center of the street, the independents, who have to be satisfied, and California’s Democratic super-majority in the state legislature appears decided to continue working under the outdated notion of persevering with the beatings until morale improves.

To encourage enterprise, job creation, and prosperity, the best factor the authorities, any authorities, can do is to keep out of the manner, to the biggest degree attainable. Texas appears to have figured that out. California politicians may do a lot worse than to research their instance.
